About the project

BMD was engaged to deliver a major section of the Carmichael Rail Network, a 189-kilometre rail line connecting the Carmichael Mine to existing rail infrastructure and the North Queensland Export Terminal.

Scope of work

  • Civil works, including bulk earthworks, haul road construction and 56 kilometres of pipe work
  • Greenfield narrow-gauge rail formation
  • Clearing, grubbing, borrow-to-fill earthworks, soil improvement, capping and drainage
  • Bridge and culvert upgrades, access roads, rail services infrastructure and existing road intersections

Outcomes

Accelerated the delivery of 113 kilometres of rail infrastructure in under two years and achieved cost savings of $30 million in subgrade stabilisation, bridge pile design and earthworks while meeting more than 3,000 environmental approval conditions.

The project successfully managed more than 1,000 personnel through BIBO, DIDO and FIFO strategies, supporting strong regional workforce participation across Central and North Queensland.

Overcoming the project site’s remoteness and large geographical footprint, BMD achieved 1 million hours lost time injury free, demonstrating the successful implementation of the project’s safety initiatives.
